| Ticks are blood sucking parasites that lurk in
the long grass, attaching to unsuspecting animals as they pass. Feeding
on your pets blood they can swell up to 200 times their original size.
They can cause infection or abscesses where they attach and potentially
transmit serious disease including lyme disease ( which is also a
human disease). Pets are more likely to be exposed to ticks in areas
of heathland, moorland, or woodland, but can often pick up ticks in
your own garden and public parks.
Treatment for tick paralysis should ALWAYS be supervised
by a veterinarian, and involves removing the offending
tick(s), sometimes intravenous fluids, plus administration
of tick antiserum and other medications. Until veterinary attention
can be sought, heat, excitement and stress should be
avoided, and food or water should not be given.
The most well known treatment for ticks is Frontline
which is effective for up to one month from the time
of application. Frontline is known to kill all three types of ticks
known to affect animals in the U.K. It will kill all ticks on an
animal within 48 hours, minimizing the risk of disease transmission,
however No product will prevent ticks from attaching to your pets,
however once dead these can be removed easily using tweezers. We
recommend seeking veterinary help to perform this procedure.
